Packaging's wealthiest fall down Rich List

The richest entrepreneurs in packaging have dropped down this year's Sunday Times Rich List that revealed the 1,000 richest people in the UK increased their fortunes by £77bn.

The UK's richest appear to be recovering from the recession and have grown their wealth in the 12 months since the last survey showed a reduction of £155bn in their fortunes.

Industrialist Lakshmi Mittal and Roman Abramovitch headed the 2010 list, which was published yesterday, having increased their wealth in the last year to £11.65bn and £7.4bn respectively.

In packaging, the Rausings, the family behind the Tetra Pak, are the highest place but have dropped from 5th to 11th overall despite their fortune remaining constant at £4bn.

However, Sean Quinn, the owner of Quinn Glass, disappeared from this year's list, despite appearing in 13th place last year.

Former Linpac owner Michael Cornish and family came in 140th having lost £100m since last year, while Sir Michael Smurfit gained £1m but fell 40 places on the list.

Abdul Alimahomed and his family returned to the packaging sphere last year when they bought back Europackaging from private equity and were placed 875th on the list with a fortune of £75m.

The families behind Morrisons and Sainsbury's also appeared high on the list in 30th and 63rd place respectively.
