Payne doubles size of product R&D facility in non-core growth push

Security product specialist Payne is hoping its newly expanded technology centre will provide a springboard for growth in its non-core sectors, such retail-ready packaging.

Payne and Payne Security are part of Filtrona's coated and security product (CSP) division and the research and technical services facility at its Nottingham headquarters has been upgraded to support its existing portfolio as well as new product development.

Almost a fifth of Payne's sales in 2009 came from products and services that did not exist in the company five years ago.

Tony Edwards, divisional managing director for Filtrona CSP, said: "The investment reflects the success of key product developments by our teams who are dedicated to turning new ideas into products that exceed our clients' needs and expectations."

The site was doubled in size as part of development, which required substantial rebuilding work in the second half of last year.

Recent work at the centre includes the development of printed message tapes and product authentication carriers for tapes, labels and films.

The firm also said expansion into market sectors beyond core categories, such as food and drink and tobacco, was another key target with the development of sophisticated message tapes that are ideal for shelf-ready and transit packaging.

Payne Security has also built a new facility for security and smart card production in Banbury to improve customer service with the latest technologies and digital printing.

Last month,
Filtrona CSP bought self-adhesive label specialist BP Labels. The Cardiff-based outfit will also take advantage of the new product development facilities in Nottingham.
