PepsiCo targets 160k-tonne packaging savings

PepsiCo is looking to cut almost 160,000 tonnes of packaging from its global portfolio by 2012 as part of a raft of health and environmental goals.

 

PepsiCo chief executive Indra Nooyi announced the 'Performance with Purpose' goals yesterday. They cover areas such as nutritional information, eliminating the direct sale of full-sugar soft drinks to primary and secondary schools and reducing waste to landfill.


Nooyi said: "We believe that a healthier future for all people and our planet means a more successful future for PepsiCo. The commitments are shared by all of our businesses, reflect our focus on profitable, long-term growth and will guide us to build a portfolio of enjoyable and wholesome foods."


As well as a commitment to display key nutritional information on its packaging from 2012, the firm said it would also "rethink the way we grow, source, create, package and deliver our products".


PepsiCo has committed to reducing packaging weight by 350m lb (159,000 tonnes) by 2012 and will continue to expand the use of recycled PET for its soft drinks bottles.

In the UK, the firm has also published a "health report", in which it outlined plans to focus on healthier products.


Its goals include 50% of savoury snacks to be baked or include positive nutrition and for 65% of carbonated soft drink can and bottle sales to be 'no sugar' by 2015.


PepsiCo UK President Richard Evans said: "Transforming the business won't be easy but the changes we propose are real and achievable.

"Our commitments go with the grain of where our consumers are going. I believe that companies like PepsiCo have a responsibility to lead change - and to be accountable for it."
