Thorntons chocolates in Innovia's

Thorntons wraps chocolates in Innovia's NatureFlex film

Confectionery manufacturer Thorntons has chosen Innovia Films' metallised biodegradable NatureFlex material to wrap its Melts range of pralines.

Natureflex is made from wood pulp and is suitable for composting because the in-house metallising uses less than 0.02% metal that Innovia said meant it only slowed the biodegradation down "by a matter of days".

The film is being converted by FFP Packaging Solutions.

Mark Aitchinson, Thorntons packaging development manager, said: "We opted for the metallised film as it offers a tight twist-wrap for the product, has an attractive metal finish and protects the flavour and texture of the chocolates as well as being made from sustainable materials."

Coatings on the film ensure a high moisture barrier, Innovia said, and NatureFlex is also receptive to cold adhesives and resistant to grease and oil.

Innovia Films UK sales manager Paul McKeown said: "NatureFlex NM gives not only superior technical performance but also has on-shelf appeal to consumers and offers environmental benefits such as compostability."
