Tate & Lyle introduces bulk packs for caterers

Sugar producer Tate & Lyle is targeting the restaurant and catering trades with a range of new bulk-sized packs called Cane Sugar Drums.

The leak-proof and water-resistant drums, which are manufactured by Dorpack in the Netherlands, come in 3kg and 12.5kg sizes in two variants – Caster and Granulated. All packs feature a carry handle.

Both packs sizes are made using three layers of recycled paper. The 3kg drum uses 250g of paper, while the 12.5kg drum uses 380g.

The labels, which are produced by Netherlands-based Verweij Labelling, feature recipe suggestions to inspire chefs. Tate & Lyle Cane Sugar Drums are also part of Foodservice Rewards, a cross-brand loyalty programme aimed at the professional food industry, enabling chefs to redeem yellow labels for rewards.

Shona Clark, brand manager at Tate & Lyle, said the firm had designed the packs to help make it easier for chefs and wholesaler to use Tate & Lyle Cane Sugar.

Research found that one in three chefs prefer to buy non-paper packaged products; one in two seek recipe inspiration for their menus; and one in four are motivated by loyalty schemes.

"By understanding the foodservice industry, we know that chefs seek innovative recipe ideas and appreciate being rewarded for something they need and purchase," she said. "We see Tate & Lyle Cane Sugar Drums as offering a win-win solution to the catering industry."

Tate & Lyle is headquartered in the UK and has more than 45 production facilities, mainly in Europe, the Americas and South East Asia. At 31 March 2009, its staff totalled 5,718 people.
