Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit Friday hinted at the establishment of a night court to deal with people who engage in littering.

“We can’t speak about nature isle of the world and when we are not making any contributions to keep our country clean and beautiful, “Skerrit said.

“I think in the new year the government has to take a more serious approach towards litter and littering our country. We will be putting more wardens out there, we have to strengthen legislation, if we have to set aside a night court to bring those of us who are found afoul of the law, to prosecute us, we are going to do these things”.

Skerrit said his administration will also be looking at the possibility of banning Styrofoam cups   and plates and non biodegradable products.

“Very early in January I will be engaging the stakeholders at the supermarkets, the restaurants and the importers…and the environmental groups to discuss those issues because at the end of the day it is our country and we, each of us must do an introspection and ask ourselves “Am I doing justice to my country?”

In October, Guyana announced Guyana it would implement a series of measures geared towards banning the importation and use of closed-cell extruded polystyrene foam, known by the trade mark brand, Styrofoam, as of January 1 next year.
