Manufacturers must indicate the plastic food container's materials, heat resistance temperature, and additional warnings under the amendments, especially plastic containers that have direct contact with food.
FDA official Cheng Wei-chi explained that certain stainless steel bottles or insulated water bottles will be included in the amendments as the bottle cap could be made with plastic materials as well.
Coated paper bags used to contain fried chicken or any fried snacks from the night markets are also likely to be regulated, as the food has direct contact with the packaging material, Cheng stated. Each plastic food containers are created with different materials, which will result in varied heat resistance standards, stated the FDA. To protect consumers' rights, the FDA will step up current regulations on compulsory labels for reusable plastic bottles or canteens, milk bottles, lunch boxes, containers, coated paper or utensils.
Cheng further stated that violators of the amendments will not only need to remove their products from the shelves for relabeling, they could be fined from NT$ 30,000 to NT$3 million.
