ORLANDO, Fla. — There's a new push under way to ban the use of plastic-foam containers in Orlando.

Supporters say cups, containers and coolers are clogging area lakes.

Eric Rollings is chairman of the Orange Soil and Water Conservation District. He would like to see the products banned.

"It is a major component of things that are wrong that we can easily fix," Rollings said.

Rollings is behind the "No Foam Zone" campaign, a push to ban polystyrene foam products in the city.

"It's damaging our lakes, our waterways. Wildlife is being harmed by it. It's not recyclable. It's not compostable, and it's a real drain on the city," said Rollings.

The slogan is on posters and even murals around town. The proposal would include single-use products such as take-out containers and cups.

Cities like New York and Washington, D.C., have already approved similar measures.

Channel 9's Michael Lopardi learned that some restaurants are worried the proposal could put them out of business.

"I think it would be a big impact, because most of our containers we use are Styrofoam, because they're significantly cheaper," restaurant manager Norman Poon said.

Poon said replacing polystyrene foam with other products, like plastic, is too costly.

"For a plastic container, in the long run, it is going to hit us really hard," Poon said.

Rollings said environmentally-friendly containers are available, but admits they cost more.

"We're paying for it in one way or another," Rollings said.

He says any measure would include a transition period and possibly some exceptions.

Supporters of the ban need approval from city commissioners. They said they hope the city will act before the end of the year.
