STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Everyone knows the slogan "America runs on Dunkin’."
New York City definitely runs on Dunkin’ -- the coffee giant has over 500 hundred locations between the five boroughs. Now that’s a lot of coffee. And that’s a lot of cups being thrown in the trash, some of which couldn’t be recycled.
New York City will continue to run on Dunkin’ -- but it’ll be running greener.
The citywide ban on expanded polystyrene (EPS), or plastic foam, starts Tuesday, July 1. The provision bans the sale, distribution and use of EPS in the five boroughs.
In order to comply with the law, the Dunkin’ Donuts franchise manufactured new hot coffee cups made of polypropylene that will replace the EPS cups. These cups can be thrown away with the recyclables and in designated recycling containers.
The company has even added a logo letting customers know: "This cup can be recycled."
The new cups hold the same amount of liquid, but have a slimmer shape and a glossy feel and shine.
Damian Desilva, a manager at Dunkin’ Donuts in Hylan Plaza, said the store began using the new cups when it received them a few weeks ago.
"Because we are a franchise, whatever New York City says, we do," said Desantis.
"I noticed a change in the cup but didn’t think anything of it," said Rosa Martinez of Oakwood, as she waited in line for her coffee at Dunkin’ Donuts’ 2425 Hylan Blvd. location.
Arlington resident Joanna Desantis said she never would have noticed because she only drinks iced coffee, even during the winter, but added that "It’s a good thing."
Many people aren’t aware of the ban on EPS -- like New Dorp resident Michael Ramiro.
"I didn’t even know that this was happening. It’s a great idea and good for Dunkin’ Donuts for going green," he said. "I will make sure I’m recycling my cups now."
