Coca Cola hints at more recycling investment

Coca-Cola has signalled that it is willing to invest further in recycling infrastructure as part of a drive to “transform recycling”.

Speaking at the final day of the RWM waste management show this week, Coca-Cola Enterprises commercial recycling manager Nick Brown said that the company would consider investing in recycling infrastructure for cans and glass.

The company has already set up a joint venture with Eco Plastics to build a new facility for producing recycled PET for use in plastic bottles, which is set to open in May 2012.

Asked if Coca-Cola Enterprises would consider further investments, Brown said: “We would be interested in investigating similar programmes with glass and cans.”

In Brown’s talk, entitled “Reducing the Impact of our Packaging: Transforming Recycling”, he outlined how Coca-Cola Enterprises is reducing its environmental impact by educating consumers, improving recycling collections and investing in infrastructure.

The presentation came in the same week that Coca Cola launched its PlantBottle, made from around a third PET sourced from organic rather than oil-based sources, in the UK (pictured).

Supported by the Environmental Services Association (ESA), RWM in partnership with CIWM is the UK’s biggest event for organisations with an interest in waste and recycling.
