Scottish Government moots ban on branded tobacco packaging, reports

The Scottish National Party is looking to follow Australia’s example by banning branded tobacco packaging in an attempt to reduce smoking rates.

The Sunday Herald reported that the SNP wanted to introduce a ban but that it could face a struggle with the Westminster government as the latter retains authority over the matter.

An SNP spokesman told the newspaper: “The SNP is favourably disposed to the idea and if Westminster will not do it then the powers should be transferred to the Scottish Parliament.”

The Department of Health’s view is that there is still insufficient evidence on the impact of plain tobacco packaging on smoking rates.

Plain tobacco packaging was a prominent issue at the recent Australian election and tobacco manufacturers have previously said that a move to plain packaging would increase the risk of counterfeing and could lead to a price war.
