SAICA enters UK waste recovery sector with Futur acquisition

Spanish corrugated giant SAICA has said it is looking for further UK acquisitions after acquiring Wiltshire-based recycling firm Futur for an undisclosed amount.

SAICA said that buying the £26m-turnover firm highlighted the importance of the UK market and opened the door to developing a SAICA Natur recovery division to add to the paper and corrugated businesses.

“Further acquisitions are likely to follow as SAICA looks to build a strong foothold in the UK,” the firm said in a statement.

SAICA president Ramón Alejandro Balet spoke of the possibility of operating a paper recovery business in the UK in an exclusive interview with Packaging News in September.

Futur provides a recycling and waste management service to large volume producers.

SAICA said it would retain and expand the firm’s management team to head up UK paper recovery and waste management operations.

Simon Dymoke, Futur managing director, said the firms were a good “cultural and strategic” fit.

“SAICA has always been at the forefront of product innovation and, as a strong family company, is able to take a longer term view,” said Dymoke.

“SAICA’s Partington Mill presents exciting opportunities for our customers to see their cardboard recycled in the UK and enjoy the benefits of lower waste miles, reduced carbon footprint and closed-loop recycling.”

The recycled paper mill at Partington near Manchester is due to open in 2012.
