Heinz accused of stealing ‘Dip & Squeeze’ pack idea: reports

H.J.Heinz’s “Dip & Squeeze” pack is at the centre of a lawsuit in the US after the owner of an online food retailer said the food giant had adopted his idea for a sauce packet without compensating him.

The Detroit Free Press (DFP) reported that David Wawrzynski is suing Heinz for breach of implied contract and unjust enrichment after it adopted Dip & Squeeze packaging format earlier this year.

Wawrzynski said he came up with the idea for the format, called Little Dipper, in the mid-1990s and pitched the idea to Heinz in 2008.

He said that, after meetings with executive, correspondence with the company and being asked to produce 100 samples for a focus group, Heinz backed out.

The DFP cites Heinz spokeswoman Jessica Jackson as saying Wawrzynski’s suit was “groundless and has no legal merit”.

The Dip & Squeeze format is designed with two functions – the lid can be peeled back for easy dipping or the tip torn off to squeeze onto food.

The format is not understood to have been rolled out in the UK.
