The future packed – The 2010 German Packaging Award

On the 27th of September, the 2010 German Packaging Award was formally awarded during the opening ceremony of the FachPack in Nuremberg. This year, under the motto "Pack the Future!", the German Packaging Institute (dvi) awarded prizes to 22 new developments in 7 categories. Featured were innovative and functional solutions by designers, developers and manufacturers, setting the trend for the future of the packaging market. The Industry-Oscar has been given out for 47 years and qualifies the participant for the global WorldStar contest - one of the most prestigious trophies in the packaging world.

"Pack the future: Under this motto, the German packaging competition directed groundbreaking packaging and machine innovation as well as surprisingly effective, seemingly small, yet lasting details. Indeed the packaging industry can only congratulate a commitment and a capability, which the German Packaging Award reflects. The results show the great creative and trend-setting potential of our industry. And that applies not only for the awarded ideas, but also for all of the 48 nominations, which we have distinguished for their new ideas and products", summed up Burkhard Lingenberg, board member of the German Packaging Institute and Chairman with overall responsibility for the German Packaging Award.

The awards ceremony was once again the industry-event of the year. More than 400 guests waited in the NürnbergMesse convention center, curious about the jury's vote. Horst Förther, mayor of Nuremberg opened the festivities for the evening and stressed the economic importance of the packaging industry. Then the mayor and Burkhard Lingenberg gave the coveted trophies to the winners of the 33rd German Packaging Competition. With the award-winning innovations, the industry developed new initiatives, generated value for all market levels and gained international momentum. It was an all around successful event followed by a reception with a pleasant atmosphere and stimulating discussions. The awards ceremony is very important to the expert public, which, through the variety of themes and participants, offers ample opportunities for networking, exchange and discussion. A not to be underestimated benefit.

The winners of the 2010 German Packaging Award come from all branches and disciplines around the packaging theme. They work in the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries as packaging material manufacturers, brand owners, designers and agents. The winning work includes the full spectrum of packaging opportunities - from user-friendly locking and dosing systems and emotionally designed sales-packaging, over efficient as well as ecological transport packaging and prototypes, to innovative components for machine technology. The total of 22 awards will be given in 7 categories: 7 prizes for sales packaging, 4 for transport packaging, 2 design, features and refinement awards, 2 for display and promotion, 4 prototypes, 1 for machine technology as well as 2 junior prizes.

Given the high quality and number of submissions, the independent, prominent jury did not have an easy task. Together with 14 experts from national trade associations, the awards were selected through fixed and universal evaluation criteria. The jurors took into account the economic, ecological and technical aspects of the products as well as their emotionality, design, user-friendliness and safety.

The German Packaging Award is under the patronage of the Federal Minister for Economy and Technology,  Rainer Brüderle, and has given the industry, for almost 50 years, decisive impulses for new applications, materials, equipment and machinery. The renowned competition focuses on manufacturers, developers, designers and users of new packaging solutions and supports the up and coming talent.
