Macfarlane targets high street with retail division launch

Distribution group Macfarlane has set out plans to conquer the high street with a new division focused on retail packaging.

The listed group is setting up a presentation and retail packaging arm that will sell high-quality litho-printed boxes along with rope-handled carrier bags, gift boxes, ribbons, tissue paper and more.

Macfarlane's plans signal a major addition to its traditional market of transit packaging and come almost exactly
two years after it acquired Allpoint Packaging, the Middlesex-based packaging distributor that specialises in supplying high-street brands.

Allpoint sources packaging both in the UK and overseas, particularly in the Far East. Following the launch of the presentation and retail packaging division, the products will be sold throughout Macfarlane's network.

Macfarlane is hoping tha the launch will help it cash in on a market it estimates to be worth £150m in the UK and will add to its existing services which include full packaging management.

Macfarlane Packaging commercial director Ivor Gray said: "Our primary focus has always been on transit packaging – helping to ensure that products reach their destination in good condition for sale.

"With our acquisition of Allpoint Packaging, and their expertise in sourcing high quality, good value presentational and retail packaging products we can now offer our existing and prospect customers a more extensive product offering."

News of the launch comes at a buoyant time for Macfarlane, after it
posted a 60% increase in pre-tax profits for the first half of the year in August.
