Wine importer hit with £8.3k fine for packaging waste offences

Wine importer and distributor De Bortoli Wines has been fined more than £8,300 by the Environment Agency for failing to comply with waste packaging regulations.

According to the Environment Agency, the Farnham-based company pleaded guilty for failing to register, recover and recycle packaging waste and "failing to furnish a certificate of compliance". The fine included £2,128 in costs and compensation of £1,686.

John Thorne, UK manager at De Bortoli Wines said: "We readily accepted our mistake in this matter and have paid our penalty accordingly.  As soon as we became aware of our breach of the rules we took immediate steps to register under the Packaging Regulations and ensure our compliance.  We are committed to minimizing the impact of our business on the environment and welcome steps to encourage recycling."

"It is important that businesses handling packaging register with the agency or join a compliance scheme as this helps with recycling and reduces the amount of waste going to landfill," said Tessa Bowering senior environmnet officer at the Environment Agency.

De Bortoli Wines supplies wine to retailers and wholesalers. The products are imported from its parent company in Australia and the packaign is mainly glass bottles and cardboard boxes.

The Environment Agency added that any business handling more than 50 tonnes of packaging a year with an annual turnover of more than £2m is required to recover and recycle a percentage of any packaging waste they’ve produced.
