SIG Combibloc boosts green credentials with new EcoPlus carton

SIG Combibloc has claimed that its new EcoPlus aseptic carton for milk and dairy cuts down CO2 by 28% compared to the firm's standard one-litre carton.

Long-life dairy manufacturer Milch-Union Hocheifel will be the first company to use EcoPlus in its products.

According to SIG Combibloc, the carton used incorporates more than 80% wood fibre and the decreased CO2 claim is in comparison to a one litre carton in the same format.

The company said that the CO2 is measured from the acquisition and processing of the raw materials to the manufacturer of the packs and the carton sleeves, right up to the moment it leaves the firm's factory.

"Our objective is to continuously improve our carton packs with respect to their environmental benefits, to make sure they continue to be the most environmentally friendly packaging solutions for long-life packaged foods," said Markus Boehm, chief market officer at SIG Combibloc.

At present, EcoPlus will be used in the milk and dairy market but in the future, SIG Combibloc will be targeting the non carbonated juice sector.

SIG said the research had been carried out by the Heidelberg-based Institute for Energy and Environment Research.
