Greenstar chief executive Ian Wakelin has been appointed as chief executive of Biffa Group ahead of the merger of the two companies.

Biffa bought Greenstar for £135m in June and the plan is now to merge the two waste management businesses.

Wakelin was the managing director of UK Waste before founding Greenstar in 2001. He said he was delighted with the opportunity to lead the combined business.

"We undoubtedly have the best platform for growth in the UK waste industry and I look forward to working with the rest of the Biffa team to realise the full potential of this business," said Wakelin.

Montagu Private Equity director Mark Keough has been acting as Biffa interim chief executive and will remain in an advisory role to help develop a plan for the combined business

"We are pleased to have retained Ian as chief executive. He has impressed all of us with his track record and leadership qualities and we look forward to great things from the new Biffa," said Keough.
