Industry Overview
The market demand for the food industry reached $282.55 million in 2005, accounting for 20%-25% of industrial output. The volume of market demand declined last year due to political disturbance and economic instability. However, market analysts expected that the situation will come back to an average growth rate of 10%-15% in 2007.
Imports account for about 85% of market demand in the food processing equipment and packaging machinery. Japan, the largest supplier of packaging equipment, reached 22% market share. Other major suppliers of packaging machinery to Thailand include China, the US, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates and Singapore.
Japanese and other countries have an outstanding reputation for high quality and technology and receive a high degree of acceptance from the end-users in Thailand. The cost of packaging equipment and upgrades also are the key to success in this segment. The need for adopting better packaging methods, materials and machinery to ensure high quality becomes more and more important in the Thai market.
